From 1913 through to 1917, Tom Thomson was known to be in Algonquin Park by early spring. He enjoyed capturing the last of the snow and the break up of the spring ice, which at the time was not a common themes for painting. This particular pieve was more than likely painted on Canoe Lake, where the mural is located today in Algonquin Park.
