Mural Artist: Tim Webb 2009
Located on site at the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce

This painting shows Lawren S. Harris's simplicity of design and shape, a characteristic of his work. As Harris progressed as an artist his work simplified more and more. This, as in many of his other works, bears the rounded features and calming shapes that typified his work with the Group of Seven. Also, notice how the blue sky is juxtaposed by the coloured trees on the island.

Description

Lawren S. Harris (1885-1970) was born into a very wealthy family in Brantford, Ontario; the cofounders of the Massey-Harris farming equipment company. This wealth gave him the ability to focus solely on his studies and future as an artist, without the confines of full time employment. Harris studied art in Germany from 1904-1907, and upon returning to Canada wanted to bring the European influences he had experienced to the modern Canadian art world. This idea was shared by his friend and fellow member of the Toronto Arts and Letters Club, J.E.H. MacDonald. The two men realized they had similar goals and art ideals and their friendship would be the driving force behind the Group of Seven. His wealth gave him the ability to help his fellow artists, Thomson and Jackson, both of whom he supported financially for some time to allow them to explore their artistic talents without the worry of paying bills. He also occasionally sponsored paintings trips for the group of painters to remote areas of Canada to capture the country on canvas.
