This winter scene by Frank Johnston is a great use of a vertical canvas. The composition is balanced by the heavy snow covered pine on the left and the open blue sky. The lone cloud acts as a pathway for the eye to follow to lead the viewer to the far away hills. His use of colour, specifically the different shades of blue and purple blue, harmonize the painting and give it unity.

Description

Frank (Franz) Johnston (1888-1949) was born in Toronto. In his mid twenties, he began working as a commercial designer in the same firm as J.E.H MacDonald, where he would meet the group of artists that would bond together over art and friendship and coalesce into The Group of Seven. Johnston was a keen member of the group and was also looking to explore a uniquely Canadian art ideal. He would join the group on many of the weekend sketching trips and the traveling box car trips to Algoma. Johnston was an ambitious painter, and held a number of solo exhibitions as well as showings with The Group of Seven. However, due to the backlash and negative publicity that The Group of Seven was receiving, he decided to show less with the group. His reasoning was that he was worried it would effect his success as an artist. He formally resigned from the group in 1924, and changed his name from Frank to Franz Johnston. After he passed away, his family moved to Dorset where they became established members of the community.
